SUMMARY:HyDEX Celebration Event
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday 7th November\, HyDEX held an event at the Derby Museum of Making\, to celebrate the achievements of the HyDEX programme. \nHyDEX has been running from January 2022 following funding from Research England for a consortium of seven the Midlands Innovation universities\, led by Keele University. \nThe aim of the HyDEX programme has been to help to kickstart the development of the hydrogen economy in the Midlands by bringing together partners in industry\, local government\, academia and the public sector with an interest in hydrogen. \nA new energy revolution\nAt the event in Derby\, which was attended by over 200 people from the region and beyond\, Professor Mark Ormerod from Keele University said it was fitting that the event was taking place in a building that was at the heart of the first industrial revolution when it was the Derby Silk Mill – the first fully mechanised factory in the world. Professor Ormerod talked about how we are now entering the energy revolution\, and that the HyDEX programme has played a vital part in raising the profile of the potential of hydrogen in the net-zero future in the Midlands and beyond. \nProfessor Martin Freer\, the Academic Director of HyDEX\, and now Chief Executive of the Faraday Institution talked about HyDEX’s achievements\, including how it has pushed forward new technologies through creating demonstration projects at university partners which are looking at new ways of producing and storing hydrogen. \nMartin explained that HyDEX has also introduced new hydrogen skills and training programmes and has been undertaking work to map out the skills needed by industry for the future of hydrogen. Martin discussed some of the international links that HyDEX has made in South Korea\, Singapore and China in order to exchange ideas about best practice. \nInfluencing energy policy\nThe subject of hydrogen policy was also discussed\, and Martin explained how HyDEX is helping to influence policy through work it has done looking at the needs of industrial sectors such as aviation\, road transport\, agriculture\, construction and farming. \nHyDEX has also launched a report looking at the potential of Hydrogen Rail in the Midlands\, and later this month will be launching its study into the case of UK-EU Collaboration in Hydrogen. \nThere were also presentations from innovators who have been supported by HyDEX\, including Green Coordinate\, Nium and Microcabs\, who explained how HyDEX has supported them in technology development. \nDeveloping skills\nFollowing this was a session on skills\, where interns on the HyDEX micro-internship programme\, including Clinton Liu\, Numan Ahmed\, Chloe Tindale and Shakana Oniyah discussed how they had benefitted from industrial work experience trough the HyDEX programme. This was followed by a panel discussion by industry representatives and academic specialists who gave their thoughts on what more was needed to develop the skills needed in hydrogen. \nDuring the lunchbreak delegates had the opportunity to visit the stands of partners of the HyDEX programme in the exhibition area\, which included Hi-ACT\, University of British Geological Survey\, Nottingham\, East Midlands Hydrogen\, Midlands Innovation and several other businesses involved in hydrogen in the region. \nThe future of hydrogen in the Midlands\nIn the afternoon\, Sally Brewis from Cadent provided here thoughts on the future of hydrogen in the region. She explained how the Midlands was a hydrogen innovation centre with huge expertise in universities and businesses in the region\, both large and small. Sally also discussed Caden’s plans for pipeline infrastructure which could connect the supply with the demand by  industry for hydrogen\, creating a hydrogen valley in the region. She also explained how East Midlands Hydrogen is working on EmStor to identify hydrogen storage in the region such as some of the depleted oil and gas fields in the Midlands. \nThe session finished with a panel discussion chaired by Sarah Windrum of Horiba-Mira and featuring Matt Barney of GeoPura\, Kelly Manders of East Midlands Hydrogen and Professor Martin Freer\, who gave their thoughts about the strengths\, opportunities and challenges facing the Midlands in the hydrogen sector. \nKeep the momentum going\nProfessor Martin Freer said: “HyDEX has achieved a great deal. It has shown that there is huge interest and demand for hydrogen in the Midlands\, and that there is a will here to develop a hydrogen economy. \n“It is important now that we keep this momentum and this network going. We need to continue to make the government aware of the important role we see for hydrogen in the Midlands\, and to push for the policies\, infrastructure and funding that are needed to ensure that hydrogen’s great potential is realised’ \nDownload presentation slides \nDownload business contacts showreel \nPhotographs from the event \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n

SUMMARY:Hydrogen: The case for UK-EU Collaboration\, London
DESCRIPTION:The UK and the EU both see hydrogen as essential to achieving net zero and both have extensive and well-funded policies to support it. Yet progress is far too slow. \nGreen hydrogen represents less than 1% of total production and still costs 6-14 times more than grey hydrogen. Only a tiny fraction of green or blue hydrogen projects have reached final investment decision. \nIn many proposed applications\, hydrogen is being eclipsed by electrification. But in other areas\, hydrogen and its derivatives still look like the best or possibly only option: fertilizer\, shipping\, jet aviation and long-duration grid balancing. \nWhat’s more\, regardless of the higher production costs of cleaner forms of hydrogen\, its system benefits in terms of greater energy security and lower overall energy system costs still look potentially enormous. \nIt is therefore time to take stock. Both the UK and the EU need to ask what their policy is getting wrong and whether they could make faster progress\, and at lower cost\, by working together. \nIn 2024\, HyDEX (Hydrogen Development and Knowledge Exchange) and ERA (Energy Research Accelerator) held a series of summits in Brussels and London where academics\, policymakers and industrialists examined the issue of hydrogen collaboration between the UK and EU. \nAt this FREE event at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in London\, ERA and HyDEX will be launching their ‘UK-EU Hydrogen Policy Report’ with a host of speakers from industry and the public sector\, outlining the case for UK-EU collaboration\, with specific recommendations to develop hydrogen infrastructure\, markets and policy.

SUMMARY:GeoPura – scaling green hydrogen to replace diesel - A HORN network event
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the next Hydrogen Off-Road Network (HORN) event hosted by HyDEX\, exploring how the hydrogen industry can work together to shape policy and advance the low-carbon agenda. \nWe’re pleased to welcome Matt Barney\, Chief Hydrogen Business Officer at GeoPura\, to our December HORN (Hydrogen Outreach and Research Network) meeting. \nMatt will introduce GeoPura’s approach to delivering zero-emission temporary and off-grid power using green hydrogen and their 250 kW Hydrogen Power Units (HPUs)\, which are already replacing diesel generators across construction\, events\, broadcasting\, and infrastructure projects. \nGeoPura has secured over £100m of investment to scale production of hydrogen\, HPUs and supporting infrastructure. This includes major funding from Siemens Energy\, GM Ventures\, the UK Infrastructure Bank and Barclays. Their ambition is to deploy around 3\,600 HPUs by 2033\, eliminating millions of tonnes of CO₂ by shifting away from diesel. \nA key part of their expansion is the HyMarnham Power project in the East Midlands – a former coal plant now being developed into a major green-hydrogen hub and backed by UK Government support and a significant green loan facility. GeoPura is also expanding into Europe with new production capacity. \nAt HORN\, Matt will outline what GeoPura does\, their latest investments\, and how organisations can get involved – from trial deployments to wider partnerships in the growing green-hydrogen supply chain. \nCould you benefit from a Green Advantage?\nOur second speaker is Christian Byron who will be sharing insights from Aston University’s Green Advantage Programme – a support scheme helping businesses develop practical sustainability skills and deliver low-carbon innovation. \nChristian will give an overview of how the programme works\, the impact it’s having on SMEs\, and how organisations across the Midlands can get involved. \nThis is a great chance to learn how universities and industry can collaborate to drive real change in business sustainability. \nThe current hydrogen policy landscape in the UKThe role of industry collaboration in shaping effective and realistic policyOpportunities for organisations to contribute to policy developmentThe importance of strategic engagement through networks like HORNThis session is designed to support dialogue and coordination across stakeholders in hydrogen\, particularly those working on off-road\, hard-to-decarbonise applications. \nSpeakerMatt Barney\, Chief Hydrogen Business Officer at GeoPuraWho should attendHydrogen technology developers and solution providersPolicymakers\, local authorities\, and regulatorsOff-road equipment manufacturers and operatorsResearchers and academicsSupply chain and logistics professionalsAnyone involved in hydrogen deployment or policy development\nDownload slides from the event here: Shaping Hydrogen Policy slides \nView the video from the event here. \nAbout HyDEX and HORNHyDEX (www.hydex.ac.uk) is a Midlands-based programme accelerating the development and deployment of hydrogen technologies through collaborative innovation and skills development. \nThe Hydrogen Off-Road Network (HORN) is a HyDEX initiative focused on supporting the use of hydrogen in non-road applications\, including construction\, agriculture\, mining\, and industrial vehicles and machinery.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the next Hydrogen Off-Road Network (HORN) event hosted by HyDEX\, exploring how the hydrogen industry can work together to shape policy and advance the low-carbon agenda. \nAndy Lewis\, Regional Development Manager at Cadent\, will be speaking at the Energy Research Accelerator’s next HORN network event\, taking place online from 12pm–1pm on Thursday 29th January. \nThis session will explore Cadent’s early-stage plans for the H2East hydrogen pipeline and what it could mean for the future of hydrogen infrastructure in the UK. \nWhat the session will cover \n\nAn overview of the proposed H2East pipeline\, a 150km largely underground hydrogen pipeline\nThe proposed route from Immingham in the Humber to Newark in Nottinghamshire\nHow the pipeline would connect regional hydrogen production with industrial end users\nThe role of H2East within the wider East Coast hydrogen network\nCadent’s approach to stakeholder and community engagement\n\nAbout the H2East pipeline \n\nThe project is being developed by Cadent\, working alongside National Gas and Northern Gas Networks\nIt represents the first phase of a wider hydrogen pipeline network across the UK\nIf delivered as planned\, this could result in around 1\,500 miles of hydrogen pipelines nationwide\nThe Humber to Nottinghamshire section is expected to reach final investment decision within four to five years\nThe pipeline would help address a key barrier to hydrogen deployment: the lack of dedicated transportation infrastructure\n\nThe project aligns with the UK Government’s announcement of over £500m in funding for hydrogen storage and transportation infrastructure\, marking the first major funding programme focused on hydrogen networks. \nSpeakerAndy Lewis\, Regional Development Manager at CadentWho should attendHydrogen technology developers and solution providersPolicymakers\, local authorities\, and regulatorsOff-road equipment manufacturers and operatorsResearchers and academicsSupply chain and logistics professionalsAnyone involved in hydrogen deployment or policy development\nDownload slides from the event here: Shaping Hydrogen Policy slides \nView the video from the event here.
